Our soil finally dried out enough to get out there and work the fields this last week. Mike was able to mow and disc in cover crop in one section of our fields (background of pic with cover crop in foreground) while Darin formed new beds for planting. The crew planted lettuces, kohlrabi, broccoli, and they sowed baby greens, turnips & carrots that were all watered in by the rains. But then… we got 5 inches of rain last Tues/Wed. and are experienced heavy rains on Friday. The rain has made it impossible to plant our late winter, early spring, & spring crops on time. At this point in the calendar year we are usually picking up the pace quite a bit with product and this year we are scraping by. We will just barely be able to eke out the rest of the winter CSA shares but there are some fun items coming soon to your shares! The purple artichokes are almost ready to harvest and so are the spring onions!!
Emily hired a flower team! She has Elle & Madeline as her full time crew this season. Elle has already started and Madeline will soon. Below are a couple pics I just couldn’t resist taking of Emily’s latest bouquet design that went to the CSA members on Thursday. She is so talented!
Our apple trees are starting to bloom!
John’s fixing the water pump so it will be ready to be placed back in the creek over at our Westland parcel once the rains stop and we need to irrigate again. Right now we are only irrigating in the high tunnels that survived the storms.
